What is the gospel? The gospel has been defined as good news but is this Biblical? No! The gospel is more than good news.
Every day we use the word ‘good news’; if you receive pleasing information you say ‘good news’, if you are called for a job opening you say, ‘good news’, if Media gives a pleasing broadcast you say, ‘good news’ etc.
Then is the gospel good news? It is more than good news.
What is the gospel Biblically?
Biblically, the gospel is not good news. The gospel is more than good news.
Apostle Paul defines the gospel to the Corinthians.
Paul first reveals the saving power of the gospel; Salvation.
1 Cor 15:1-2: Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also you have received, and wherein you stand. By which also you are saved, if you keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless you have believed in vain.
Salvation has three-fold application
- The past
- The present and
- The future
I.e.
a) In the past, I was saved from the penalty of sin; justification
b) In the present, I am being saved from the power of sin; sanctification
c) In the future, I will be saved from the presence of sin; glorification
Salvation is the main purpose of the gospel and all the three-fold applications are embedded in the gospel.
A gospel which does not reveal and lead people to salvation is not the gospel.
Definition of Gospel
The gospel is; –
Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures. And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures (1 Cor 15: 3-4).
The gospel is Jesus Christ death for our sins, burial and resurrection on the third day according to the scriptures. The gospel is Jesus Christ not good news.
The Bible is called the word and the word is the entire gospel. From Genesis to revelation, the Bible focuses on the gospel; Jesus Christ.
In the entire Old Testament we see prophecies revealing Jesus Christ, who He is and His salvation to humanity. In the New Testament, the gospel (Jesus Christ) is revealed to humanity.
The gospel is Jesus Christ
John 1:1, 14: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Rev 19:11-13: And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
Jesus is the word of God, the gospel.
Every word in the Bible points and reveals the gospel; Jesus Christ. When you minus Jesus Christ from any preaching, teaching or writing, that is not the gospel.
The main purpose of the gospel is salvation and nothing saves humanity except Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the salvation. Thus anything that does not point, reveal or lead people to Jesus Christ for salvation is not the gospel.
The gospel is Jesus Christ. The gospel is God and Jesus Christ is God. He is the ‘I AM’. See Jesus is God.
The gospel (Jesus Christ) is everything you need. You do not need what the world tells you you need, you do not need what people tell you you need, you only need Jesus Christ.
You need salvation; Jesus says ‘I AM’
You need way; Jesus says ‘I AM the way’
You need health; Jesus says ‘I AM health’
You need life; Jesus says ‘I AM life’
You need food; Jesus says ‘I AM the bread of life’
You need healing; Jesus says ‘I AM the healer’
You need wealth; Jesus says ‘I Am wealth’
‘I AM’, ‘I AM everything you need’, Jesus says and this is the gospel.
Everything you need in this world and in the life after is Jesus Christ not what the world promises and gives.
Jesus is everything you need, forget the rest. And whoever preaches any other gospel is accursed.
Gal 1:9: As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
Do you believe in the gospel?
If I ask you this question, I know you will say, yes! But do you truly believe in the gospel?
Most of us believe only in the first half of the gospel that Jesus died and was buried but few believe that Jesus is resurrected; He is alive.
If you do believe that Jesus was buried and rose on the third day, every day to you is Easter Sunday.
If you believe not only Jesus died for our sins but He rose on the third day according to the scriptures and He is here with us, dwelling in us, you will be exceedingly happy.
Many of us are not happy. We are worried of what to eat, where to sleep, what to wear, what to tithe, security, etc, because we do not believe that Jesus Christ resurrected on the third day, He is alive and He is here with us.
If you believe that Jesus resurrected, He is alive, here with you now and He is everything you need entirely in life, why are you not happy? Why are you worried? Why are you seeking help from humans?
God (Jesus) says, ‘for thus says the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall you be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength’ Isa 30:15.
Return to Jesus Christ now, believe He is resurrected, He is alive, here with you now and you will be saved from all world problems and troubles. Rest and believe that all was finished on the cross and you have no work to do but only to thank praise and worship Him.
Believe that Jesus resurrected on the third day according to the scriptures and be exceedingly happy.
The Lord is Risen
