Should a Christian tithe? This is a question which many people ask. The Bible talks of tithing but should we tithe?
When you search, you will find all kinds of explanations but where is the truth?
First you must learn the law, the eight dispensations and grace before reading this.
Should a Christian tithe?
Yes and No.
1. No! A Christian should not tithe
Why we should not tithe?
a) Tithe is only found in the dispensation of law
The word tithe is only found in the era or dispensation of the law not in the dispensation of grace.
In the dispensation of grace, the word is only talked of in Hebrew as the writer explains something different which you will find down this article.
When you say we must tithe, it becomes a responsibility, a trait of the dispensation of the law.
The law demands responsibly while grace demands only responding. There are clear distinct differences between the two dispensations.
Tithing is a responsibility of the Old Covenant (the law) and many people have taken the law and mixed it with grace.
They have taken tithing which is of the law and mixed it with grace blind-folding themselves with the verses in the Book of Malachi without realizing that the Book of Malachi lies inside the law (the Old Testament).
The writer of the Book of Hebrews clearly confirms that tithing is of the law; part of the law dispensation.
Heb 7:5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham.
b) Tithing is a dead work
The New Testament, specifically in the period of grace has severally used the word ‘Dead works’.
Dead works refers to all the works of the law.
They are dead because when Jesus died on the cross and nailed the law on the cross and it is still on the cross. See the purpose of Jesus death. One of the works demanded by law was tithing.
If you live in the new dispensation of grace and to you it is a must you tithe, move from doing dead works and come to grace.
Heb 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Jesus finished all the works demanded by the law on the cross.
c) Jesus is the tithe
Jesus Christ is the tithe paid on the cross once and for all.
This all what grace is; the tithe and ransom for our sins penalty was paid once and for all by Jesus Christ on the cross.
After Jesus death on the cross and ushering in the new dispensation of grace, we are not under any obligation or responsibility of the law.
The writer of Hebrews specifically chapter 7 deals with this issue. Hebrew is the only book lying in the era of grace talking about tithing.
Realizing that the era of law ended after Jesus death and the era of grace ushered immediately in His resurrection. Take time to read the entire Hebrews chapter 7 and where you cannot understand ask.
d) If we must tithe we have no need of Jesus Christ
If you say a Christian must tithe, then we have no need of Jesus. It is denying Jesus mission and purpose of dying on the cross and nullified His entire mission to humanity.
Heb 7:11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec.
Jesus was the tithe, tithed once and for all for every person who believes in Him.
Do you think your money, gifts or any other thing you give in the name of tithe is worthy in the eyes of God as compared to His only son, Jesus Christ, who die on the cross and was made the tithe for every person who accepts and believes in Him once and for all? Wake up.
2. Yes! A Christian should tithe
Why we should tithe?
a) To thank God
We should tithe not as a responsibility of the law but as a way of saying thank you to God.
b) A sign of responding to God’s grace
The laws demands responsibility while grace demands responding. We tithe to respond to God’s grace and His entire works to us not as a responsibility.
In this dispensation of grace, God only wants us to thank, praising and worship Him knowing that every work was accomplished on the cross by His only begotten son and Jesus confirmed it when He said, ‘It is finished’.
Jesus meant that He has accomplished all responsibilities of the law for the entire humanity and He has nailed it on the cross forever; He has fulfilled and abolished the law.
The promises given by God in Malachi lie in the dispensation of the law where man had to do a responsibility for God to bless him/her. This is the total opposite of the dispensation of grace.
Attaining (receiving) God blessings and riches is only by grace through faith in His only begotten son, Jesus Christ, not by our works (responsibilities). It is only through the expense of Jesus Christ that we receive God’s riches.
This is the definition of grace: God’s riches at Christ expense.
Tithe not to receive but to say thank you
Tithe not to receive but to say thank you to Jesus Christ for all what He did on the cross for you and me.
When you tithe to receive blessings as stated in the Book of Malachi and you do not receive, you will start saying that God is not true while it is you who does not understand His ways and works.
When you tithe and you receive God’s blessings, God has not given you since you have tithed but at the expense of His son, Jesus Christ. This is grace.
Tithing or without tithing as long as you’re covered by grace of Jesus Christ, you will receive God’s blessings.
Are you living in the dispensation of law or dispensation of grace or are you mixing both law and grace? See the eye opener.
God bless
