Prayer is a communication with God. For a communication to be complete, there must be hearing and speaking.
Prayer is a Communication – There Must be Hearing and Speaking
In a complete perfect communication, one party speaks and the other listens, and vice versa.
If one party only speaks and does not hear, there is no communication, and vice versa is true too. This means that there is a break (barrier) in communication between the two parties.
And so it is between us and God. For our prayers (communication) to be complete with God, there must be hearing and speaking for both parties. If this is not so, it means there is a break (barrier) in communication between an individual and God.
A barrier in communication between an individual and God is all related to the individual’s personal relationship with God.
In prayer, there is time to speak and time to listen, and vice versa. It is not about speaking/uttering words like a parrot.
Why is it a must to hear God when praying?
1. To pray in God’s Will
A person can know Jesus Christ Will by ONLY hearing God speak to him/her individually. There is no way you can pray in God’s Will without hearing Him (present tense).
Sometime back i went to a fasting center and one morning God woke me up to listen to so-called-pastors and church leaders praying. I heard them pray asking God for money for church fundraising since they had a fundraising on Sunday in the church. They asked God to take the money lying idle in the bank and bring it on Sunday fundraising for ‘their church’.
Where this prayers in God’s Will?
To their minds, nothing wrong with those prayers. But to God, those prayers are demonic. Why?
- God does not do fundraising – ever heard of Jesus doing a fundraising to preach when walking on earth or Peter, John, etc?
- God does not steal – God cannot take other people’s money to give to you; that is stealing.
And in that instance, God opened my eyes to the people leading the church worldwide and I mourned for the sheep, even today, I am still mourning.
If only they could know God, hear Him but blind leading blind. Many people who say they have heard God, it’s their minds speaking to them not God.
God’s Will in prayer His includes;
2. Prayer Direction
When you listen, God directs your prayers. Prayer direction is God leading you in prayer and this direction includes;
3. What to pray for
God tells you what you are to pray for at that moment you are before Him.
Many times I went before God to pray with my own prayer subjects and as I opened my mouth, God would say to me, ‘Joshua, I do not want to hear what you are to pray about. Pray about this ….’
Or He could just tell me, ‘I do not want to hear what you are about to pray’. When I heard that, I know its my responsibility to ask Him, ‘Lord, what do you want me to pray for?’ And right then, He always started directing.
I learned this many years ago, that today when I go before God to pray, I listen first and pray in His Will and direction. I surrender, Joshua dies and I allow Him to take over.
This is not so with religious people and people with no relationship with Jesus for they cannot hear Him. They just pray as they have thought, led by their emotions and feelings, set during the day, recite written prayers, they go to God with prayer points, etc.
What He has not given you to pray for, you request first and wait for a response – patient and hearing are part of the True Bride of Christ.
Not every time you will go before God and He will give you what to pray for, many times He just wants you to thank Him, Praise Him, Honor Him without making any requests or asking for anything. Religious people always go before God to beg for things.
4. God gives you words of prayer
In prayer, its God to give you what to say, you just not utter words harmlessly like a parrot or a barking dog. And here, the Holy Spirit plays one of His major roles.
It is God to give you word by word what you are going to say. In prayer, the first thing we do is surrender ‘self die’ thus we shut our minds, thoughts and imaginations, then we open our mouth and the Holy Spirit takes over.
Words of prayer come with prayer language. Prayer language is the language of heaven – the language also used in the Bible. You cannot use worldly language in prayer. There is also Pharisees or religious prayer language.
From a far off, I can tell you a person religious praying and a person praying through the Holy Spirit. Do you not know devil worshippers pray too and they are inside the so-called-churches even leading prayers?
Jesus said, ‘My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me’ (John 10:27)
You cannot pray without hearing God and walking with Him in prayer otherwise those are your prayers; you have not communicated with God.
Now you know one reason many people prayers are not answered yet praying praying, fasting fasting, tithing tithing.
Have you ever spoken to a person and when you finish, the person opens his/her mouth and you just ask yourself ‘has s/he heard what I have said?’
Because a person can listen and not hear. Remember in the Parable of the Sower, some listened but they never heard. How do you know a person has heard what you have said? If a person responds accordingly or obeys.
God knows you have listened and heard if you obey or respond accordingly.
If you are hearing God as you pray, that means you will obey and respond accordingly to His direction otherwise you are disobedient and rebellious. Reason I am using ‘hearing’ nor ‘listening’ in this revelation.
If God is not dictating your prayers, leading and directing you, who is? Either demons or self and if self it means ‘Pride’ and self ‘flesh’ hasn’t died.
If you are not hearing God as you pray, you are not communicating with God but just uttering words and making noise
Look for that barrier that hinders you from Jesus that you cannot hear Him in prayer – it’s all about an individual personal relationship with Him.
And that’s all the different between Spiritual Prayers (Holy Spirit praying through us) and fleshly Prayers. See spiritual prayers vs fleshly prayers
Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who strengthened me. Have you been praying, are you praying through Christ?
To many its all about, ‘Jesus sit down and listen to my prayers, as I command and dictate you, beg and claim from You. I do not want to hear anything from You Jesus, listen to me!’ – it is foolishness!
