To walk in the spirit is to walk in the Holy Spirit – to walk in God. To walk in the Spirit you must understand who the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) is, His ministry and how to walk in Him.
See who is the Holy Spirit and the functions of the Holy Spirit as taught by Jesus
There is a difference between walking in and walking with. A true Bride of Christ walks in the Spirit not with the Spirit. See 3 relationships the Holy Spirit has with humans
Gal 5:16: This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh
Gal 5:25: If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit
To understand how to truly walk in the Spirit, we must study and understand how the disciples walked with Jesus when He was on earth, whom after He ascended the Holy Spirit was send not be orphaned as He promised.
Disciples Walk with Jesus
The disciples were very obedient to Jesus – only doing what He told them to do and not doing things He didn’t tell them to. They did not do things because they were written or done by others or because they were traditions but only did what Jesus told them to.
Jesus disciples never fasted when with Jesus. The Pharisees came to ask Jesus why His disciples never fasted as they do
Mk 2:18-20: And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples fast not? And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridegroom fast, while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
It is after this when Jesus said,
Mk 2:21-22: No man sews a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse. And no man puts new wine into old bottles: else the new wine burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.
Jesus was revealing that grace and law cannot mix. The Pharisees were living under the law but His disciples living under grace.
Even at times the disciples did against what the Law requires – against what is written.
The disciples plucked head of corn on Sabbath which was against the law – it was the Pharisees who asked Jesus why?
Mk 2:23-24: And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the Sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they do on the Sabbath day that which is not lawful?
There are many things the Pharisees did the disciples never did
As the Pharisees tithed since it is written in the Bible as a law, the disciples never tithed when walking with Jesus
As the Pharisees fasted for many days, the disciples never did it when walking with Jesus
As the Pharisees sacrificed and offered, the disciples did it only when instructed by Jesus from His mouth
As Pharisees asked people for offerings and tithes, Jesus disciples asked no person for offerings – people offered by their will
As the Pharisees did what the law requires day and night, the disciples cared not about the law, only caring of their obedience to everything Jesus says unto them
Do you know that it is Jesus who was telling His disciples when to pray? Yes!
These are just some examples of things Pharisees did but Jesus disciples never did when walking with Him – there are many more in the Bible; look for them.
The disciples had full obedience and trust in Jesus Christ not to what is written (law) or what people say or do or tradition. They knew entire Law but chose to only listen to Jesus and obey Him only.
Disciples walk with Jesus on earth presents to us a very clear picture of how we are to walk in Spirit.
How to Walk in the Spirit
Before He died, Jesus promised not to leave us (His disciples) orphaned but send us a helper/comforter (Holy Spirit)
John 14:16: And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever
John 14:18: I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you
He told His disciples (us) to go wait in Jerusalem for the promise.
Lk 24:49: And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until you be endued with power from on high
And after He died on the cross and ascended, on the feast of weeks (Pentecost), the Holy Spirit was sent as promised as seen in Acts: 2. See prophecy in Jewish feasts.
Jesus disciples were to walk in the Spirit in the same way they walked with Jesus – listening to the Holy Spirit, doing everything He tells them to do even if it is against the Law and not doing what they are not told to.
It is for this reason that Jesus Christ taught them who is the Holy Spirit and His functions before He died on the cross.
The same way the disciples walked with Jesus when He was on earth and in the Holy Spirit after Jesus ascended, it is the same way we in Jesus Christ must walk in the spirit.
We must listen to the Holy Spirit, do only what He tells us to do even if it is against what is written (the Laws) or tradition and not do what He hasn’t told us to do – this is what is called obedience to the Holy Spirit otherwise it is rebellion; a sin.
You should fast not because it is written or others are fasting but only because the Holy Spirit has told you to
You should tithe not because it is written or a person has told you to or others are doing it but only because the Holy Spirit has told you to
You should sacrifice and offer not because it is written or a person has told you to but only because the Holy Spirit has told you to
You pray as the Holy Spirit commands and speaks not according to your will, others will, written prayers, etc. The Holy Spirit will instruct you in prayer to pray according to the Will of the Father.
We must do everything not according to our will, or because others are doing, or because it is written or a tradition but only because the Holy Spirit as told us to for us to be in line with God’s Will – remember Holy Spirit testifies of the Word (Jesus Christ) that if you choose to only obey Him you will be in line with the WORD.
If you look carefully, it is always the Pharisees who ask us walking in the Holy Spirit why we are not fasting as they, tithing as they, doing what is unlawful on Sabbath, doing against people tradition, etc the same way they were asking Jesus.
Pharisees in the Bible represent religion. Religion is Law not Grace. It is the religious people always fight to pull others into religion like they.
Religion always fights light, fights to remain in its position even when defeated. For this reason they thought crucifying Jesus (light) was the solution.
The question is do you have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you for you to walk in Him?
Religious and worldly people neither know nor have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them.
John 14:17 ‘The Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him’
Many people who have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them do not obey Him.
Many people are doing their wills not the Will of the Holy Spirit (Jesus Christ). You do the Will of God only when you are doing what the Holy Spirit is telling you to do not what you are telling yourself (your will) or others are telling you to.
Jesus was doing the Will of the Father not His Will and we are to do the Will of Jesus not our will. Yourself must die for Christ Jesus to live in you and use you as His vessel for His Will.
But how will you do God’s will if you do not know the Holy Spirit and you do not have Him dwelling in you?
Many people say they have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them but frankly they do not know Him or know His voice. How will you obey a voice you do not hear or know?
John 10:27: My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me
Yes! Those who truly know Jesus Christ know His voice through the Holy Spirit and follow Him. ‘Follow Me’ means ‘obey’.
To have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you means being baptized with the Holy Spirit. But how will Jesus Christ baptize you with the Holy Spirit when you have denied Him and not repented your sins?
It’s only Jesus Christ who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. Baptism with water is not baptism with the Holy Spirit and being baptized with water is not being baptized with the Holy Spirit. See what baptism is.
A walk in the Spirit is not doing what is written, obeying man’s traditions, doing what others are doing, etc but obeying what the Holy Spirit is saying unto you.
A person with the Holy Spirit only does what the Holy Spirit instructs and commands him/her not what other people tell him/her or what is written – and this is how the disciples walked with Jesus and continued with the Holy Spirit.
Since Jesus spoke many years ago and His words were recorded in a book called the Bible, it does not mean Jesus stopped speaking – He is speaking today but only to His own sheep.
If a person comes to tell you to do something, or gives you a prophecy, it must be a confirmation of what the heaven (Holy Spirit) is saying unto you or has told you otherwise go to prayer and ask God through the Holy Spirit if what has been spoken unto you is from heaven.
The Holy Spirit is peaking to us each and every second of our life on earth. He is telling us what to do and not, what to say and not to say, where to go and where not to, people to associate ourselves with and people not to, etc. It is up to us to follow (obey) Him and surrender to His will.
Disobedience of the Holy Spirit is a sin which is taking many people to hell.
If Holy Spirit tells you to do something do, otherwise don’t. Things you do not understand, ask Him and He will answer you – only if you are walking in Him, Him dwelling in you.
Sometimes the Holy Spirit will tell you to do against what the law (Torah), against the ordinary, against people will, against tradition, etc – just obey.
If it was not for the Holy Spirit, Apostle Paul could not know that all things are lawful until the Holy Spirit fed him the things he considered abominable.
When the Holy Spirit is in you, He teaches you all things, guides, leads and dictates your walk each second of your life – This is a walk in the Spirit of a true Bride of Christ.
The difference between religious people and bride of Christ is this; Religious people do things because they are written or its tradition but bride of Christ do things because the Holy Spirit is telling them to
No religious person, no Pharisee, will inherit the kingdom of heaven – they are all a brood of vipers (Mt 23) because if you do not have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you have evil spirit
Listen to the Holy Spirit; Jesus Christ is speaking to you through Him now – obey
Jesus is coming

Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand
