What is the Biblical main purpose of sex?
The Bible does not use the word sex but uses other words referring to or meaning sex. When using the word ‘sex’, I mean sexual intercourse.
God creates humans and at the right time He gives them sex desires.
At the right time, God made Adam need a helper. Realize that before God brought the need to Adam, Adam lived with animals and plants in the Garden of Eden without feeling lonely. More in finding a wife or husband in God’s way.
Then God made Adam sleep and created him a helper.
Gen 2:21-22: And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof. And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
When Adam saw the God’s creation brought to him, he said, ‘This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man’ (Gen 2:23). See the meaning of these words in Biblical meaning of man and woman.
Adam’s words in Gen 2:23 are quoted. The next words in verse 24 are not quoted together with verse 23 since they are not Adam’s but God’s.
And God said, Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh (Gen 2:24).
In Gen 2:24 is where we find the first mention of sex by God and God giving its main purpose.
Biblical main purpose of sex
Biblical main purpose of sex is not pleasure, reproduction, etc but unification; for ‘two to be one flesh’
Mk 10:8 And the two shall be one flesh: so then they are no more two, but one flesh.
Mt 19:5-6 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and the two shall be one flesh. Therefore they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.
I know many people do not understand the concept of how two become one flesh. I also know that many people do not know that when God says two to be one flesh, He talks of sex because it is in sex when two become one flesh.
In the first mention of sex in the Bible, its main purpose is clearly brought out; ‘For two to be one flesh’.
I know that in Gen 1, God tells man and woman to ‘be fruitful and multiply’ thus have sex for reproduction. If you stand with this as the Biblical main purpose of sex, you are mistaken.
Gen 1 is an overview of the creation story while Gen 2 zooms in the details. Thus Gen 2 fills in the gaps of Gen 1.
Example
1. There are no two creation stories in the Bible
Both Gen 1 and 2 have the creation story and there are no two creation stories in the Bible. Gen 1 is an overview while Gen 2 zooms in giving us the details.
2. Creation of both man and woman
Gen 1 does not give us the details of how God created both male and female. It only says,
Gen 1:27: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Gen 2 gives us the details of how God created both male and female. Thus the main purpose of sex is revealed in Gen 2 which gives us the details of Gen 1.
It is after God created woman and brought her to Adam and the two became one flesh when God said, ‘Be fruitful, and multiply’ (Gen 1:28).
Humans cannot multiply without first being one flesh in sex. Two people first become one flesh in sex then they reproduce.
There is a long time perversion of the word which says that the forbidden fruit which Adam and Eve ate is sex. This is not true.
You have seen that Adam and Eve became one flesh (had sex) and told to ‘be fruitful and multiply’ even before Satan tempted them. See that Gen 1 and 2 comes before Gen 3.
And if sex was the forbidden fruit, how did they become one flesh without sex? How were they to multiply without sex?
When Jesus was asked, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?’ (Mt 19:3).
Jesus did not answer, ‘if she does not bear children divorce her’ because sex main purpose is not reproduction but Jesus said,
Mt 19:9: And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery: and whoso marries her which is put away doth commit adultery.
Because God created one man for one woman thus only one man should unify (have sex) himself with one woman for two to be one flesh and vise versa.
It is only in sex two become one flesh. Therefore, whosoever you are having or had sex with, you became one flesh. And if you are having or had sex with multiple partners, you became one flesh with all of them and this is fornication and adultery.
See more in fornication and adultery (coming).
Hold on to the truth, the Biblical main purpose of sex, as we go on in this study of sex and the Bible and you will see how unification is the main purpose of sex as put across in the Bible.
Therefore the Biblical main purpose of sex is unification, ‘two to be one flesh’.
How then do two become one flesh?
God bless
